As dawn is breaking

As most of you know I now have 2 jobs. Tuesday and Thursday will find me in the salon assisting 3 very rad hairdressers. 6 days a week I drag myself out of bed (at 6am)to vacuum the salon, clean sink bowls and other minor cleaning duties. This morning upon arriving home (at 8:10am) the house was very quiet, no one greeted me at the door. Wow I thought Randy is up and out with the dogs early today. NOT!!! all 3 of the stinkers were in bed snoring! I mean how fair is that! I am on my 3rd cup of coffee and they are sleeping. Jack did have the decency to thump his tail when I walked in the bedroom. Males!!
On other news on the home front I am still not finished with the decorating chores. I have decided that I am going slow as I do not want to rush through the festivities. I have scaled back on gift giving. I have shared with friends that I would rather have their time then a silly gift, much more precious.

Thanksgiving Wrap-up

Today is our last day in Austin :-( We have had a absolutely great time. The high & low:

*We now know more about staining and sealing concrete floors then I thought possible. The floors look great!

*I have witnessed the longest Brio train built by a 3 year old (and you have to drive them "slower" so they won't break)

*3 year olds cannot exist on cookies alone

*spending time with Ashley, Craig & Jackson

* spending time with Becky, Michael, Cirrah & Cooper

*chair throwing by toddlers is indeed a Thanksgiving ritual

*seeing Christmas (Hunter calls all things related to Christmas by just Christmas) through Hunter's & Jackson's eyes

*a grown man can fit inside the Ikea tunnel

*"No I'm not" followed by "Yes you are" Hunter's catch phrase

* marshmallows go on sweet potatoes after they are cooked

*Hunter eating chips (he uses the two handed system, less spillage)

*telling Hunter to try to keep his eyes open while doing the infamous cheese face (again the two hand system)

*although the service was slow the venue, food and company was worth it with Brenna's in laws

*I really do not like Diego & Dora

*Why did Ashley give Brenna an obnoxious sounding Christmas ornament?

*Oh yea, "Oh Toodles" on Mickey Mouse Club. I mean Really!!!!

*Seeing the folks that totally folded on the secret Elfster

*people bringing their coolers at the BBQ place

*Brenna, Edward & Hunter

*watching Hunter's mouth move while spinning the Santa toy

*Jackson smelling the tree

*Jackson's cheese face

*so many belly laughs

*The Florida Gators

*I love my family

A pot of gumbo

I love the month of November. Cooler weather (finally), college football in full swing, the possibility of gumbo by months end. Getting the garage cleaned out is always on the list. Of course that means Christmas is coming out of the attic!!!! I believe that is Randy's most favorite day of the year! I am really trying not to want to purchase additional Christmas decorations. Really do not have the funds this year so that makes it easy. But I do want to mix things up this year. Change things around. I have been in a rut so.....I am kinda nervous about the dogs. They do like to wrestle quite a bit. I can just see the tree come crashing down and those sweet faces saying "he did it!" One of my earliest memories is a tree coming crashing down at Grandmother Carleton's house, there were 3 little girls running in the house and lots of sweeping up was involved. Ooops! I seem to remember Chris just standing there with all her hair blaming me and Sheree. I bet there was a bow in that hair. She had great hair, but quite the tattle teller :-) kids!! I want a polar bear for the front yard, Cost.co had a great one but yikes! it was 100 bucks. I wonder if I could rope one of the neighborhood black bears into being sprayed white and posing in the front yard for the season. it could work.... I will just get Jack to do it, he likes to dress up.

Hunter and Hudson

I cannot believe how fast time is going by. Hunter is 3 and today Hudson turns 2!!!! WOW!! Babies no more. The excitement of their births, the sitting up, crawling, walking, talking. The oh so sweet things about them and the not so sweet things. Every part of their being fills my heart with love. Talking to them, watching them learn, taking the next step to boyhood. So much joy awaits them as does sadness. Their Mommies & Dad are there to teach them how to handle the ups and downs of life. They are so lucky. They are so loved. I feel so privileged to be their Gamma.

Halloween Costumes

I find it amusing that Billy Mays family has endorsed his likeness for a Halloween costume. I mean sure he was a great pitch man, made a few jingles but Halloween?? What is wrong with ghosts, goblins, witches, super heroes, cute animals for small children? A pitch man? I would think it would be rather annoying to be standing by him at the party, all that yelling. Would he clean everything with his products? Now that might come in handy. I'll suggest that to Randy as the house could use a good scrubbing.
So what are your Halloween costume plans?

HAIR!!!

The cool thing about working in a hair salon is you get to see dramatic changes to someone's appearance. The uncool thing about working in a hair salon you get to see dramatic changes to someone's appearance. It makes me want to change my hair constantly!! Last week it was the cut. Thank God Jessica was busy!!! This week the color. Now I love hair color. Too light, too dark, switch it up, add some gold, red, pink, purple, black, brown the sky is the limit. And it really does not damage the hair. (the blondes can get a little dicey) Heat is the real culprit on damaged hair especially the sun. The brunettes are making quite the comeback. Women for too long have associated blond with youth. Brown is such a rich color, the texture of it, the depth of it. You can have surprises in brown hair. Turn to the left a hint of gold, to the right a touch of red. Sometimes so subtle you think did I just see that? Winter is all about warmth, brown hair just feels and looks warm. Erinn & Stephanie have gone brown and it totally rocks on them!! Next time you are in the chair, think to yourself, same old same old or......take a risk. It is just hair, you can always change it.

Dogs, work, weddings, kiddos and of course football

After having 4 dogs for a few days 2 is pretty easy. The boys are back to their mealtime barking and snorting. Nanook has adapted quite well. He has the nighttime routine down, he will even start asking for cookies before Jack. We like that he hangs with us in the evenings. Jack just goes on to bed. Jack's ears are constantly wet. Hmmm...a mystery.

I like working when it is busy. Please make all appointments on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 10 and 3. A lot of drama goes on in hair salons although for as many stylists that work here it is kept to a minimum. I find it amusing.

I have been skping with the grand kids at least once a week. My heart melts when Hudson calls me "Goo-gone" A great example of why we do not let our grandchildren pick our names. Bennett is always so serious yet has a sweet smile to give. Kate likes to lay on the bed and throw kisses. Hunter is a busy boy and reads me books. I think their Moms & Dad need to install web cams in their rooms at night so I can watch them sleep.

Wedding plans are moving along. I like how Erinn is open to suggestions. I have come up with one or two. I do hope she is writing things down.

Home improvements are at a standstill (pesky wedding). The study needs crown molding and the wires hidden. And whose idea was it to get glass tops? They show the dust a lot!!! The hallway needs to have the electrical moved, the floor laid and the drywall. Oh yea, the ceiling patched and paint touched up. Oh and that pesky cabinet over the fridge needs to be fixed. Maybe this weekend.

The Gators are on a roll. I love college football. Homecoming this weekend and the Razorbacks.

Walking the Dogs

Walking with Randy on Wednesday made me realize something. I absolutely cannot stand how he holds the leash. It makes me nutty!!!! It consumed me for at least 1/2 mile. I tried walking in front of him (easy to do as he walks sooo slow) but in using my mother's "eyes in back of head" skill I could still see it. With each step I took it became increasingly more difficult to hold a conversation with him. All I thought about his arm in the air with a loose hold on the leash. Nanook loves this by the way as does Jack. At one point I actually grabbed the slack part of the lead and encouraged the dog back on the path. I have discovered I like walking both dogs at once. I get a rhythm going with ear plugs in and we have a good time. Well except when they suddenly veer off in different directions at once. We are working on that. I control the dogs (mostly) they are not controlling me. Isn't that the way it works? Now Randy does walk them alone quite a bit. His arms must get really tired holding them both in the air the whole time. They love taking him for a walk. When they see me coming with both leads I know they think "oh no, she is taking us....rules, rules". You know this is about control, right? Damn it something else to work on.

The Weekend

Randy gets back today. Yeah!!!! And yes, the popcorn ceiling is still up. I did not feel like the mess. No new projects started. This is new for me, I usually begin and end something when Randy is gone more then a few days. We need to finish up a few things first like; crown molding in the study and the finish work in the hall. Oh yea, the finish work when we had to move the cupboard in the kitchen. When was that started? February!!!! So I think I made a wise decision not to start another project.
I had a nice few days. I walked the dogs, went to the gym, lunch with friends, dinner with friends, read a book, ate nachos while watching the Gator game. I watched all the HGTV I wanted with no one doing that heavy sigh thingy. It was nice. Me time. Everyone needs a little of that to recharge their life.
I skyped with all the grandkids yesterday. I sang songs with The Trio and Hunter read me Brown Bear while dressed as a whale shark. My heart is full.

Popcorn Ceiling

I am thinking about taking the popcorn ceiling down while Randy is out of town for a few days. Do I really want to tackle that mess? Would I like a flat ceiling? Yes!!!! But what a mess. Lately I have been thinking I do not want to put too much effort into things. In the past I would think nothing of hosting a large gathering on the spur of the moment. Now I do not want to even think about it. Even hosting the Survivor dinner gets a little much for me. Not the actual work just the "too much". Not sure what it all means. Perhaps it is my expectations I put on myself. We had some friends (just 2) over for a early Sunday dinner a few weeks ago and it was just right. Very relaxing, good conversation, a couple of belly laughs. Just right. No expectation of being more. Relaxing not hurried. It is the hurried part that gets to me. I find as I am getting older I want to savor moments, not being in such a rush. When entertaining I want more then the checklist: dinner - check, show/game/visit - check, out the door - check. I like to linger, who says as soon as the meal is done the table must be cleared, dishwasher loaded, counters wiped down. What has happened to staying in the moment? And what does this have with popcorn ceilings you ask?

Come Together - Survivior

Macy's is promoting a charity event this fall so we decided to incorporate our Survivor dinners/viewing/side betting into this charity. It will be a lot of fun, we took some of our winnings from last season and bought ourselves the official buffs. We are also donating the rest of the money from the last couple of seasons to this charity event. So not only will we be enjoying good food, good company, giving to others we will look smokin'

The Cleaner

The season finale of "The Cleaner" on A & E was on Tuesday night. It was well written and well acted. I really really like this show. In my opinion it is the best show to come on TV in some time. The season finale brought together some of the people William (Benjamin Bratt) & crew have tried to help over the season. Some have remained sober, some not and some died. Just like real life. Whoopi was also in it (the second time this season), she plays William's former sponsor. I like Whoopi, I wish she would act more. In a scene with William's wife Whoopi talks that just not William was the addict in their relationship so therefore he was not the only one celebrating his "sober" birthday. It was a lot of food for thought. Whoopi also pointed out to William that the people around him needed to celebrate his birthday, it gives recovering addicts hope for their own sobriety. Not all people think they "need" the meetings but other recovering folks need to hear and share with people in long time sobriety. In other words as in child rearing it does indeed take a village. As I said food for thought.

I think I might run today

I have been thinking about it and I feel I am ready for the commitment. It is a huge step to take. I want to take it. I know it can be the answer. That and a good ab & arm routine. Running to me is like gardening. I really want to be good at it. I can even run indoors, a plus in Central Florida. I do need new shoes, damn it I may need to wait a few days. I can wash a few heads and pay for them. No, no, no I will start tomorrow, it is Monday after all. No more excuses. So tomorrow it is. I wrote it therefore I must do it.

My old rowing crew is racing in The Head of the Charles, that would have been fun.

South of Broad

I have just finished reading Pat Conroy's new book "South of Broad". It is written in typical Conroy flowery fashion, I liked it. I was back in Charleston, I found myself reading it in the slow Charleston drawl. The storytelling is something only a southerner can do. Embellishing at the right moments, drawing you in soothing your soul. Adding a surprise or two. Of course at times it is over-worded but that is something Conroy does best. There are no perfect characters just people who came together at a time in their lives when they needed to make a family. For a few days I was a part of their family and I am still thinking about them. It has been awhile such a cast of characters has hung on to me. It once again made me realize that the people who walk into our lives are there for a purpose. We need to nurture our friendships. They cannot just sit on the shelves and dusted off every now and then. So take a moment today, grab a person from your shelf, make the call, shoot off an email, text something, anything. And if you happen to say it in a slow southern drawl all the better.

Peace Out

Life in the Fast Lane

*I spent some time on Saturday pulling weeds, it started out only for a few minutes and ended up being an hour.

*I like that Nanook has settled so nicely in with our family.

*Scored my Christmas wrap & ribbon today.

*No more Saturdays left until College Football begins.

*I am so very happy my ebook is back in my hands.

*My oldest grandson, Hunter, likes capes. This is a good thing.

*I shake my finger back and forth and say no, no ,no to Nanook like Hudson just for no reason.

*After 37 years of marriage Randy finally knows how to do the dishes (& also the laundry).

*I still wish I liked to garden, this does weigh heavy on me.

*I miss the Saint Ines Chardonnay from Cali. I cannot find it here.

*Even though I do not have an IPhone, I find myself saying "there's an app for that".

*I start my new job this week. I am going to be an assistant for my 3 favorite hairdressers. Not to worry folks it is only on Tues & Thurs 10-3.

*I want to dance & giggle with Kate.

Welcome Nanook

We had a good first night with Nanook. He has been very sweet. he and Jack have worked a few key issues out. He slept in the bedroom NOT the bed. One of those "key" issues. The sweetest moment came when they were sitting on either side of Randy with their heads in his lap giving one another a kiss. Life is good.

For those of you who have remained sleepless in my e-book saga, a new one is on the way. S.ony is replacing it for $30. I am very happy.

I was very sad upon waking and found Senator Kennedy had passed. Like him or not he was a force in American politics and will be greatly missed.

Today is Brenna's birthday!!! Whoo-hoo!! Number 30!!!

Ahoy Mateys!!

I LOVE sailor outfits on little boys. (I actually like them on big boys, I will save that for another day) When Hunter was born a sailor suit was purchased, sadly he never wore it. Off it went Cali upon the birth of Hudson and then Bennett. Nope they never wore it, something about seasons and sizing. Along came Jackson and a year later, a handsome young man in his sailor suit.

Monday....

I like Mondays. A new week. A new beginning. So many possibilities. It is so easy to begin on Monday. The rest of the week just does not seem to have all the possibilities that Monday has. Sunday night is the restful time, early dinner, early to bed to begin Monday. Wednesday is the middle, wait I wanted to do so much this week, need to hurry up now. And Friday, well Friday is the start of the weekend. The week is over, better wait until Monday to begin. So many promises begin on Monday. Go out and begin and enjoy your Monday.

This picture has nothing yet everything to do with Mondays.

My Ebook

I miss my book. Somehow prior to leaving for Cali it was dropped or perhaps Jack stepped on it, I am not sure. I was unable to read the first line. Oh well, I thought, I will get it taken care of upon my return. #?#! x-ray machines!!! Now the display is gone for half of the page. A direct cause of the x-ray at the airport. Now it needs to be sent back to Sony and they will replace it for me. In the meantime reading off a laptop with a 17 inch moniter is easy on the eyes, not exactly convenient. I mean, I cannot just stuff it into my purse to take along for the pedi and hair salon experience, can I? I may have to resort to buying a paperback today as I read all this week's gossip rags on the return flight. And even I am getting tired of Jon minus 9.
Can I sue TSA do you think?

Home Sweet Home

I had a great time in California. Spending extended everyday time with The Trio was such a gift. I felt I really got an insight into their souls. The little things that make them who they are. When we spent time with Hunter after he was born I felt I really connected with him, each time I see him it only reinforces that bond. I feel I really connected with Hudson, Bennett & Kate this trip. I was able to spend one on one time with each of them. The way Kate lifts her head when she is on a "mission", Bennett when he leans into his highchair and smiles (enjoying a food product), Hudson when you pick him up he lays his head on your shoulder and just folds into you. These memories join my favorite of Hunter when he would lean over and cup his ear to "listen". I treasure these children.

That said I am happy to be at home. Erinn came back in town so I was able to spend a few days with her. We went and toured the wedding venue. It is perfect for them. I am so happy she does not have to settle for something less. Randy said he wishes it was sooner the 12/11/10 , I wonder does that mean he does not want to listen about wedding plans for a year and a half? Erinn went back up to Gainesville last night. She starts her final semester on Monday. She will be finished at UF November 20th. Wow!!

Jack was happy to see me, I think he missed me. I wonder what he will think on Tuesday when Nanook comes for an extended stay. Yes, that's right, Nanook is coming ahead of the family in anticipation of the move to Florida. He will spend his time checking out the school systems, neighborhoods and dog parks. I know he is happy to arrive just in time for Gator football.

Fun Times with The Trio

A few things:

*My number of Spanish words has greatly increased along with my number of signs

*My love of Raffi has come back

*Board books are all the rage

*Making animal sounds is a great source of entertainment, did you know some Spanish animal sounds are different?

*Holding a sleepy baby girl while she touches her eyelashes is precious beyond words

*Being a witness to Hudson's language explosion has been awesome

*Bennett eating watermelon is a wonderful sight to see

*How many pieces of sidewalk chalk can you hold while going down a slide? Hudson can hold seven.

*Garbage trucks are fascinating

*Each time hearing the Count announce the number 18 as the number of the day is like the first time. (the only SS episode they watch)

*The kindness of toddlers

*Hudson wanting me to kiss his owie even though his Moms were right there

*Listening to them talk to one another, laugh with one another, tickle one another, hug & kiss one another

*Watch their sweet faces light up and smile just for you

Busy with The Trio

My days have been super busy, I am loving every second. The Trio are bundles of energy, constantly in motion. I love the repetition of toddler play, each time is the first time. So many parents are constantly pushing their kids to the next stage. I am really happy that my girls have chosen the path of "enjoy the moment".
Things in Florida are going well, Erinn and Andrew have chosen their wedding venue. They are able to use the caterer they both wanted. Erinn has the southern backdrop she wanted. They are meeting with the photographer this week to nail down the package they want. Oh yea, Erinn found her shoes. What a busy week she had.
Carey's surgery went great. We went and saw her yesterday afternoon. The kids were super excited to see her. So many new things to touch. She will be home today, yea!!!!

The Elder & The Young

Jack has been very tolerant of the newest member of the family. He does not mind when Toby stands under him while he drinks and eats. He will share his den bed but not his cookies nor his nighttime bed. He does not mind when he shares his walk, he is not too crazy about sharing his Daddy. At times you can see him roll his eyes when Toby is acting like the crazy dog. All in all Toby has been a good fit in the Ryan household.

Blogging from 30,000 feet

I am currently at 30,000 feet.on the way to Cali. The flight has wi-fi. Totally cool!!!! Take off very bumpy but we have smoothed out. Enjoying a cocktail, chatting with Erinn and Randy. I am happy.

Off to Cali

At 5:25 pm I am off to Cali. I have necks to kiss, cheeks to pinch (face & bottoms), smiles to kiss, bottoms to wipe, tears to dry, toddlers to chase, dump truck songs to sing and I will love every second of it. If only the flying part was not happening. Is 8 am too early to begin medicating? I hate anxiety, such a useless emotion. I mean really what is it good for? Every other emotion has a purpose and it's purpose is what? Oh well at the end of 6 hours and 23 minutes I get to see Carey's beautiful face. The kiddos will have to wait until morning unless...do you think she will wake the Trio up for the airport run?

Sisters

As most of you know I am one of 4 sisters. Yikes!! The sister relationship is complicated, if you are not one you just don't get it. This last weekend I was fortunate to be in the company of all my sisters, now did we get a picture, not a one. Shame on us. The oldest of the gang also happens to be our mother's primary caregiver. Mother's health has not been good the last couple of years and she has had a doozy of a summer. Chris is her health care champion. She takes her to numerous doctor's appointments, tries to make sure she eats well, sits through the operations, keeps her up to date with the family, spends countless hours at the assisted living facility. Chris does have her own health issues and she takes care of her precious grandson on a daily basis. Is she perfect, of course not, she is human and is doing what family does. I salute her. We should all take a lesson. Thank you, Chris

Dresses, Family & Friends

Last Friday a caravan headed to Winter Park, destination: Solutio.ns Bridal. We were strictly on a fact finding mission. Checking out the bridesmaid dresses and gazing a bit towards the bridal gowns. We had all the bridesmaid minus 2 so we wanted to get a feel for what they wanted. We found the perfect dress for them. Tall, short, curvy, straight, bosomy or not. This was the dress. They happened to have one in the right color, stunning! Oh yeah we found this dress after 4 hours of Erinn trying on gowns, fact finding only. Until.....she tried on "the one" it was magic. She walked, sat, danced, kneeled and it was perfect. Like her future MIL, Beth, said when she walked out you saw the whole picture, not just Erinn, not just the dress but the bride. And the headpiece? Started out as a little comic relief but yet..no veil for my sassy modern southern bride. Did I mention we had to sedate Erinn to remove the dress? This is how much she loved it.
We had our dear friends, the Styrons in from Alabama for the weekend. It never matters how long we go without seeing them we are back on Bristol Place (where we met) 21 years ago. The girls (Erinn & Elizabeth) were just 6 months old, our families clicked. I treasure this family.
We also had the Virginia part of the family in plus Aunt Mary from south Florida. Jackson had a blast with Toby even though Toby tried to get fancy with him the last morning. Such a sweet baby. (both of them!) It made Erinn's day that so many of her family came to share in her happiness.
The Browns threw a fabulous party. What a great family Erinn is joining. How did all the kids grow up? It seems like yesterday when I met some of them in kindergarten. Does this mean I am older?

The Big Party

We are gearing up for the big party next week honoring Erinn & Andrew's engagement. The VA part of the fam are coming to Otown. The Brown's are hosting. Erinn and I have to choose a picture of the 2 of them. Carey took some great shots of them at the beach. A friend of Erinn's is coming today and taking some more. The Brown's backyard is the background for today's photo shoot. Now many of you remember their backyard, so beautiful. Beth & Pat did an outstanding job when they made it over a few years back. I wonder if Toby will make it in a shot or two. Erinn also wants some professional pictures of her for her work. The hard part will be making a choice. The camera does love Erinn. Some people just know how to hold their head, smile and not blink. Carey also has that gift. I do not. We also have been looking at different vendors this past week. Erinn does know what she wants so this does help in selecting the vendors. The photographer will be the biggie. She found one the other day they have packages from $3500 to $12,000!!! Yikes! Sign them up, NOT. We still have a few more venues to check out. Since all the girls (minus the MoH Brenna :-( ) will be in town we are planning a trip to check out styles of dresses on Friday. Erinn has also been looking into converting to Catholicism. It is a huge decision, one that Randy and I support. The other big decision we have to make for the party is do we go with just beer & wine, an open bar or a signature cocktail with the beer & wine. While in Charleston a few months back I had a martini made with FireFl.y Sweet Tea Vodka. It was yummy. I have since learned you can mix it with lemonade. I think served in mason jars with an apple green ribbon tied around (the jar) would be pretty. Now if if only it was my choice. :-)

From the Outside

Since I have been a part-time invalid (thank you, Rocko)I have logged in mega hours on MJ (those of his closest peeps call him that). Now I LOVE Michael. From the first time I heard "I'll Be There" I was hooked. How could all of "that" come from such a little kid?!? The sweetest voice and the precious smile. Who knew his Daddy was beating the crap out of him? When he left the Jackson 5 to go out on his own he totally blew us away. The singing, dancing, the videos, a great entertainer. Of course with all the fame out came the media dogging his every move. Sure he was a little odd, what extremely gifted artist is not off just a little? All the plastic surgery was a bit much. His Dad and brothers (by their own words) made fun of him as a child about that very nose. Words do cause lasting effects. And then the accusations, did he or didn't he? I get what he meant about co-sleeping. I did that with one of my children. Americans have a real issue with this. I do think you should stick to your kids in this practice. I do know if one of my girls had been molested there is not enough money in the world to buy me off. In the second case, he chose not to pay. People say he got off because of who he is, perhaps who he is, is why charges were filed in the first place. I mean look how he looks, look at all his bizarre behavior, he must be guilty of some greater crime. When you hear from the people who really knew him and loved him, you step back and say wait a minute.... Are all these people wrong? The media wrong? Who to believe? I think love wins.
After all when we look from the outside we think we know...

Kimball

As I sit and wait for Randy to get ready so we can depart for the vet, I am overcome with sadness over the prospect of losing another pet. Three in 6 months. Kimball did awesome on Friday and then Saturday we could only get him to eat a few nibbles, nothing yesterday. Last evening when Randy removed him from our bed....a wet spot. He had been sitting in his urine and not a clue. (it did not get through to the mattress!) We decided it is his time. We tried our best. He had changed so much since Sponge & Phoenix passed. He was truly interacting with us no longer aloof Kimball. Jack will miss him. Of the 3 Jack had a special thing with Kimball. He was so happy on Thursday when we brought Kimball home from the vet.

And so it's over.....Farewell sweet Kimball, Wimball, Dimball...the cat who came for "just a few days, Mom I swear" 2000-2009

Back at Home

Kimball is back at home from his 4 day stay at the vet. Upon returning from the super vacation Kimball was down 5 pounds and very ill. He was in acute renal failure. $717 later he is better. He will never be "cured". We will be lucky to have another year with him. He is eating and drinking. He will have to have fluids injected daily. So far he has been hiding out in the guestroom only going out to the patio when taken, he does come back into the house on his own. He is on monster antibiotic pills once a day. Those we grind up, mix with water and inject into the back of is throat. And how did this happen you ask? At first an infection was suspected. This turned out not to be the case. Kimball has always been a nibbler of plants. Hmm....the only "new" plants introduced to the patio this spring other then the herbs were a Sega Palm (too prickly) and my beautiful hydrangeas which are both poisonous to cats! He was caught several times nibbling on the flowers and the leaves. We believe this is the culprit. So people if you have a nibbler check out your plants! Time for me to put on my nurse hat and hook Kimball up to his bag of fluids.

Shh...What's that sound? :-(

Quiet
That was the sound in the house yesterday. After a very busy vacation around 3 pm yesterday that was the sound echoing in the home. No toddler watch, no dump truck song, no cat meowing, just quiet. To say we had an awesome time is an understatement. Way back when, when the girls were planning this trip hopes were high for a good time and every now and then reality surpasses anticipation. This was one of those times. Sure we had a couple of toddler meltdowns, a little rain, too many cookies. Every moment was a memory. I cherish them all. From the smallest, sweetest Kate smile to the huge surprise of Andrew proposing to Erinn. The 110 pounds of fish, climbing over baby gates, board games in the evenings, raw oysters, Jack swimming in the ocean, Hunter running in the "river", Bennett eating sand, Hudson mastering the use of "no", Hunter fishing with the guys, all the kiddos falling in love with Andrew, spending time with Elizabeth, teaching Brenna to sew, Erinn's new puppy Toby, snuggling with Bennett, laughing so hard your face hurts, shaved ice, Hudson & Bennett saying Pop (for Randy), many, many toddler kisses.
and now.......Quiet

The Power of Glossy

This month marked the first month I did not receive Mar.tha Stew.art Livi.ng in the mail. I had been receiving the magazine since the first issue. Until recently they all still lived in my home. In an attempt to reduce my carbon footprint I decided to let this magazine go. And then... the new one hit the newsstand. What pretty greens on the cover. Beautiful, slick, glossy pages. I wanted it and I wanted it bad. Every time I went to the Pub.lix there it sat, seducing me. No, No I say I can look at it online. But, wait a minute beach week is fast approaching. I need on the beach material, Bennett may need bath reading material. I cannot read my e-book on the beach. So on Friday I will succumb I will buy it. A peacefulness has settled upon me. Martha will be coming to the beach with me. Oh yea this morning I got a killer deal to renew, I mean after all they are giving me a canvas bag.

Look who stopped by!!

Carey, Stephanie and The Trio stopped by for a few hours. They flew in on the red eye Wednesday night and headed to South Florida for a few days on Friday. The kids are more then yummy. Kate would look at Jack and giggle. Hudson loved the tunnel and organizing the toys. Bennett is a thinker, he likes to get the lay of the land. Man does he look like his Papa Randy. Something about the forehead. I cannot wait wait for their return and our week at the beach. Erinn said the short visit was just a tease and she was right!

Bamboo Green

You know how it is.  You have the idea.  You stand in front of all the colors at your local big box store and you see all the shades of green.  Do you know how many shades of green there are?  A great deal of them!  You zero in on one, yes that's it.  The color of green.  You even bring another body with you, yes she says that is it.  You take your 2x4 swatch to the man.  He mixes it.  You hand over the cash.  You rush home in anticipation of the awesome color you have just selected.  The room is taped.  You gently pour the paint in the tray, load the roller up and roll on the wall.  Wait a minute, it looks a little bright.  Well everyone knows, you think to yourself, that paint dries darker.  One wall down, then 2..3 and then the final wall.  Perhaps a second coat is needed.  Second coat applied.  Still very bright.  Sleep on it.  Waking the next morning you glance into the room and WOW your eyes actually hurt.  You know it is all wrong but wait a minute perhaps the person who will actually spend 12 hours a day in the room will like it.  Nope he says it makes him dizzy, jet lag I inquire?  Back to the other big box store hand over another square (Thank you Judy) and come home again and roll the paint on.  Olive 05 it is.

Study Makeover

We are in the process of making over the study.  It is the last room with wallpaper.  Other then changing out the floor and baseboards the room has been untouched...until now.  I know what I want the room to look like.  Very clean lines, minimum stuff.  (I hate stuff)  We want to incorporate the large wooden table that Uppie Manny made many moons ago.  We also have a steel submarine bunk that we also wish to include.  So oak & steel will be the hard surfaces.  I have been thinking alot about color and then I found it, staring right back at me.  Randy took this picture last December.  I liked it so much I blew it up and framed it.  The inspiration for the room.  Yes!!  Now on to the fun stuff, actually redoing the room.

Rain, Rain Go Away

*There is something about a great cup of coffee!!  When you get just the right amount of grounds, the right amount of sugar (just a smidgen), right amount of cream.....mmm....I could make a Bennett face.

*I have put aside the felt food for the time being and have been concentrating on scrap booking.  I have had ideas floating around and needed to put to paper.  I have been playing with the digital and still am not sure about this media.

*I love my Son.y electronic book.  I just love it.  When Carey was young we used to spend hours laying on the sofa in silence reading books, I have been doing the same with Erinn.  :-)

*I started lifting free weights yesterday.  When not taking classes I have taken the lazy way out and used the machines.  I took what I have learned in the classes and did some on my own.  My backside and legs are sore today, a good sore.  I also started running.

*I plan to steam wallpaper off today.  Randy is out of town so the study is free.  Erinn refuses to help.  I think she will cave.

*Have you ever followed your dog around the yard in the pouring rain with a umbrella while he does his business?

Erinn's Coming Home!!!

Well she is packed up and winging home for the summer today!  I am really excited about her being around for longer then a few days.  Of course with Erinn comes stuff.  I love Erinn not so much the stuff.  And then the food.  It is more difficult with her eating with us.  Although we do eat mainly lean protein and veggies, you have to watch how you season things.  Must read all labels all the time.  And the writing is so tiny.  I made a butter last week using cilantro, lime & chili powder.  It is great on corn on the cob.  Sunday I put it on haddock with panko bread crumbs, can I say yummy.  Well today I will try to achieve the same taste with olive oil and no panko (hmm..I wonder if wheat or gluten is in panko)  Yea yea olive oil is healthier you say but butter.....  And no more cookies for Cimi (at least until beach week)  I have become addicted to Pub.lix chocolate chip cookies with pecans.  Unfortunately for some reason they turn into muffin tops    :-(  on me.   Another good reason to enjoy Erinn, she does love to work out.  And watch life.time movies and the soaps.  I will not get involved into that Trya show about models thinking it is live when it is years old and Erinn knows the outcome.  I will not be sucked into that!

Firecracker Plant

I added a firecracker plant to the patio this weekend.  Kim saw this idea in a back issue of Martha, using a structure and then adding a plant.  So like any good friend I "borrowed" the idea from her.  We were unable to determine the exact plant she (Martha) used, I think this firecracker plant was a close second. The plant has tiny red flowers in the shape of firecrackers.  I also added some blue daze to a orange flowering plant in the front, a little go gator for the summertime.

Man, what a dirty patio.  Oh well another project for another day.

Gardening Cat

One of the herbs I planted this last weekend was some catnip.  I thought Kimball would enjoy it.  When I first sat it on the patio he rolled over it and was really jazzed by it.  Then he left it alone until last evening.  I guess he did not approve of my planting.

Yard Work Weekend

What a great weekend here in Central Florida. The temp was around 80 with a nice breeze blowing. The humidity was down so what is it time for? Yard work!! I believe we are finally done in the front. We added a flowering plant and sod around the mailbox. We had been on the hunt for a dynamite red crepe myrtle for the side garden and found one on Saturday, yay!!! We also put up some Boston ferns hanging on the front porch. Then it was on to the back. We added weed guard behind the screen enclosure and 16 bags of mulch later we were finished. Randy planted some jalapeno plants and that area is done. For the patio this year I am doing grasses and herbs in the pots. I love the look of flowers but am tired of the mess. The next big project will be the much neglected side yard. So much to do; raking, weeding, wall building. Thank goodness Erinn is home for the summer. Speaking of Erinn, she popped in for a quick visit. Man she is messy! Good thing we love her.

Home Sweet Home

We are back from our Spring Trip. Although Randy had a few "honey do's", I believe he managed to relax a bit. Kimball has been sweet as he can be since our return. He even slept on the bed with us last night. I think he was a little lonely while we were gone. Jack was happy to be home, he even failed to ask for his cookies last night. Back to the grind today hmm... what exactly is my grind? I think I host "Sur.vivior" this week. I guess we need to watch last weeks. In the past when we have returned we never knew what we would find. The above picture was a nice change.

Bennett Bash 2009

What a great day! Bennett Bash was a blast as always. It was great seeing everyone. The whole family was in attendance with the exception of Carey (& Family), Brenna (& Family), Erinn (& Andrew), Chris & Sharon. You guys were missed!! Good food, Good times, Good conversation. We shared stories & pictures of family. Bruce is doing good. He is able to communicate, his humor is there. He is going back for a revaluation this month to see if more therapy can be provided. Currently he is swimming twice a week. Michael is graduating from GA Tech this May. He is employed as a lifeguard and plans to continue with that for the time being. Weymon is working for a gas piping company in Atlanta and is enjoying the work. The Lee Bennetts are off to DC this week to take in the sites. **News Flash** Aunt Nita's purse was nowhere to be seen. Uncle Sam is getting old :-( Robyn has had success with WW, Yea for her! She will be in Charleston next weekend while we are there. Kim sang in church this morning, a beautiful voice. Rosie played the flute, outstanding! Such a treat. Jack kept everyone entertained with his fly catching technique. Uncle Bobby & Aunt Margie along with GG Rose get the award for staying the longest. It was really nice just catching up. A good day.

Felt Food - Easter Bunnies

I have been wanting to try my hand at making felt food for the wee ones. First up Chocolate Bunnies!! They were super easy to make. I bought a kit from http://www.lilybeanmarket.com/ I did modify them somewhat. I decided to hand stitch them instead of using the machine. I like the look of the hand stitching better. I also used a fiber fill instead of the solid piece of foam. Next up sushi!!

Hope & Health

After 15 years living in Orlando we finally made it to the zoo. We participated in a benefit walk for Hope & Health (an organization promoting HIV/Aids awareness throughout Orange & Seminole counties) The zoo is small but very clean. The day was overcast and wind was in the air. The Hawler monkeys put on quite a show. The noises they can make. The highlight of the day was when a turkey gobbled in response to a 2 year old boy's gobble, the look of excitement on the boy's face was priceless. 3 little girls giggled as Randy stuck his head in the elephant cut out. He thought the grand kids would get a kick out of it. (well okay it was my idea but he immediately complied) A fun morning and it raised a good deal of money for a good cause.

Four Weeks In

Today marks the end of the 4th week that I have been hitting the gym at least 4x. I feel great, I am lifting weights 3 of those days and at least 1 day I do an hour walk with Judy. I also walk Jack 6 out of 7 days. As of last Monday I have lost 8 pounds and 5 1/4 inches (3 of those in the tummy!) I have done an herbal detox (4Life) and have actually been taking vitamins. My sleep has improved thanks to drinking a cup of "Get So.me ZZZZZs" tea. I swear I fall asleep within 30 minutes of drinking that stuff and more importantly I am not waking up for a few hours every night. My diet consists of 4 meals a day, I try to stay in the 400 calorie range, with mainly lean meats and veggies. I am married to someone who likes a sweet in the evening and that is hard to resist. Thanks to the pre-sugars :-) we switched to sugar free ice cream, not bad. I am convinced of the MUFA role in my success. I read about it in the "Fl.at Bell.y Diet". Of course I would have liked to have seen greater progress but I realize I have made a successful change in my life. I actually like working out again. Give me a little Brittany and I can do an hour on the arch trainer!! I love Brittany!!

Rocks, Rocks & Rocks

Our weekend was consumed by rocks. Judy had (about 14 tons or so) a pile of river rock she no longer required. We needed rock to place around the screen enclosure to help with drainage and to stop dirt from sliding onto the patio. So off we started 4 loads later (14 containers per load), a trench being dug, weed guard laid down and voila the project is now 2/3 completed. It is impressive to think that our fingers touched every single rock. Randy came up with all sorts of ways to make the job go faster. His final solution was using an old window shutter as a sifter and shovel the rock on it and then just picked the rock from there. I preferred sitting on the ground and just picked my way through the dirt to score the rock. There was something relaxing about picking through the dirt. Of course the weather was awesome this weekend, highs in the low 70's and a nice breeze going on. It was actually the first gardening project that I did not whine through. Now it is on to the final side of the enclosure. We need to build a wall as the ground is much higher on that side of the yard. I have a really cool old mantel that will be incorporated into the wall although Randy says no. I say yes, I wonder who will win hmm... I vote me!

I went and scrapped Friday night, had a wicked headache so only managed a 2 page spread of my oldest grandson. I am really getting into the random pages I have been making. It is so different from the way I normally scrap. I like it.

We capped off the weekend with Sunday night dinner at Judy's. She made a yummy meatloaf. Now I make a killer meatloaf but this was great, it had Italian sausage it it. Tasty.

Garage Sale Saturday

*****UPDATE***

Today is Wekivas annual neighborhood garage sale. We are heading out in a few to check things out. We are on the hunt for a lawn mower. We have discontinued our lawn service and will be doing our own. (damn economy) Have you looked at the prices of new lawn mowers? Outrageous!! A push mower (with no engine) is $140! I do not mind cutting the grass, I cannot stand the edging & weed eating. Of course I am sure my tune will change come August. We are also hoping to score a couple of pack-n-plays for the West Coast Ryans to use on their sojourn to the east. I am hoping one of my neighbors are hosting a garage sale she had the sweetest little girl things last year. I bet I can score some plastic kid yard art (aka houses, slides, swings) any takers?
Peace Out

**Update**
For a mere 100 bucks we scored: lawn mower, pack-n-play, cute dress for Kate, wall sconce, miniature snowmen for Brenna's miniature tree, Br.io train track(s), nice piece of coral and several knat bites.

And the beat goes on.....

March is here and man it came in like a lion. Cold and windy. We enjoyed an unexpected longer visit with Mary and Raymond. We did a little shopping, chatting & eating. Raymond & Mary are the kind of guests you can be quiet with. A comfortable quiet. I like that. I also like Raymond's humor. It was a good weekend.
Erinn is down from Gainesville. She is actually headed to NSB (New Smyrna Beach) for the week. She scored quite the cute swimsuit at the Tar.get yesterday. She will probably come back all brown. I like brown skin, makes you look smaller. :-)
I had a dream the other night that Bennett said a 5 word sentence, "I want to go outside" I cannot believe the twins will be 1 year by months end. I cannot believe I am so lucky that I have 4 wonderful beautiful grandchildren. I have 3 great girls, 2 that are married to equally as great of people, 1 betrothed (I like that word, committed but yet not official) to a great guy. A pretty good husband although he makes me nutty at times. We have lost a lot this year in terms of money, retirement is a long way off but yet....Life is Good. We had some unsettling news from dear friends and it made me think of one word...Gratitude . Sadness for them yet gratitude for my life. I am in good place in which to lend my shoulder, gratitude. The old saying God never gives you more then you can handle, in this case I hope it is true.
Take time out today and literally smell the roses.

Books, Books and Books

As most of you know I am an avid reader. I love all (most) books. I love the beginning, middle and end. I would never dream of sneaking ahead, taking a peek. I belonged to one book club that met once a month. In the beginning it was great. Good books, good discussions. And then little by little the chick flick books began to enter in. I mean have you ever read "Brid.get Jones Diary" I mean come on people!! I could not even listen to that!! What was that point? And then, personal life discussions. We were there to discuss the book and ended up talking about so an so's dating life. It drove me nuts so I stopped going. Kinda of funny I still read most of the books they read. Now they are into the Twi.light series. UGH!!!!! Now to the real point of this post, Brenna & friends started an online book club, asked me to join. The 1st book is "The Guern.sey Literary and Potato Peel Pi.e Society" It is a collection of letters talking about the German occupation of Guernsey during the war. It is a good read. You want to know what happens to these people. The online meeting to discuss the book is tonight and I AM NOT DONE!!!! I cannot believe it. The first time ever (other then that BJD book) I left it too long, got all involved with scrapbooking last week, had company over the weekend. The weather delayed Raymond's flight so they were extended until tomorrow. Excuses, excuses.....no excuse

New month, new fridge

February began with a visit from Ashley, Craig & Jackson. We had a fun weekend with them. Jackson is getting so big and is so chub chub you just want to eat him up. He has Grand Nana's ankles. Aunt Sheree also has them. His are the cutest in the group, does anyone else have them? We lived out of the bar fridge on the lanai. We were in denial (well I was) about the demise of the fridge. I loved my fridge, freezer on the bottom. I convinced many a friend to go bottom fridge. And what kind did I go for this time? A side by side. I wanted filtered water on the door and this was a great deal. Of course as usual nothing is easy at the Ryan's. The new fridge was too tall for the space so the cabinet is resting on top. (Randy is fixing that today, bets anyone :-) ) When we connected the water line we heard the leak behind the dishwasher so off went the water. When Erinn and I returned from Austin in August we had first discovered the leak, I shut off the water had no idea that it was the fridge water line. Randy ran a new line yesterday. We celebrated the first clunk of ice as our ice maker had been on the fritz for about 2 years. Oh yea, we went with stainless so you know what that means!! More new appliances!

I had a dream last night Sponge was kneading my feet and then resting on my ankles. I actually woke up to get her off me.

Farewell Old Friends

As most of you know we bid farewell to Sponge and Phoenix on Friday. Phoenix had a mass in her colon and Sponge had a mass in her sinus cavity. In April they would have turned 14 years old. They annoyed the crap out of us. Sponge with her failure to use the litter box and Phoenix with her ceaseless whining. But yet, we loved them. They were family. No more tripping over Sponge going into the bathroom, no more wondering why Phoenix can not go out of the cat door as she uses it to come in. We bid you adieu. Damn cats.....

(and if you wonder when you get there Phoenix has taken care of the lizards in heaven)

Numbers

I have been giving alot of thought to numbers lately. Numbers are such a big part of our lives. Money, budget, passwords, cc numbers, the days of the month, our age and yes our weight. The Ryan's are doing a Family Fitness Challenge. We are to send in our weight to Stephanie she will work out the %'s for us. Now Stephanie is completely trustworthy and it doesn't hurt she is bound by hippa :). I just cannot put the number down. Like the God Opr.ah says we need to get past the number. I mean the world knows what she weighs and she is still breathing. I know I am fatter then I have ever been, I think other people have noticed. I can run 3 miles in 43 mins., do 45 mins on an elliptical like thingy, do a 60 minute body pump class and 2 minutes on the wii hula hoop challenge. (more numbers) and yet.... I can blame the 2 big M's (medication & menopause). I need to get past this. I will get past this. I will become a Tit.le Nine model.

Sony Surround & Wii

Pictured above is the new surround sound system and Wii, oh wait that would be Sponge (a much younger Sponge). $737.48 later and she is be back home. What's wrong with her you ask? We DO NOT know! All kidding aside she was one sick kitty. We took her to the vet on Friday, many tests later and no real answer. Of course we can spend a few more jingles and we may get a answer. They are leaning towards the big C. She is on 3 medications and is drinking and eating. Of course the medications may be the reason for that. Phoenix (aka Muffin) realized on Saturday am wait a minute where is Sponge and sunk into a depression. She is now back to eating and being her usual whiny self (thank goodness). Jack was so very sweet when Sponge came home, he could not get enough of her. Psst...a family secret reveled: Randy was caught turning on the bathroom faucet and lifting Sponge up to drink, whats next? Leaving the toilet lid up?!?!

Home Sweet Home

We touched Orlando at 11:27am after leaving Austin at 5:30am. FYI - nothing is open in the Austin airport at that hour, not even a coffee vending machine. Not even free wifi!! After a quick cup of coffee on board I then snoozed the rest of the way to Atlanta. Hit a Star.bucks for my new fav - Expresso Truffle, yummy and then snoozed to Orlando. Sheree picked us up and after a quick side trip to pick up Jack we were home. The house smelled like Christmas. Unpacking and more snoozing, we had breakfast for dinner and Pub.lix birthday cake and hit the bed at 7:30pm. And now, the Ryan challenge is on! I am hitting the gym at 9 for body pump followed by a 30 minute run. Then Christmas is coming down. And I got the best b-day present, Tim Tebow is hangin for his senior year!!! Go Gators!!

Greetings from Cali

We are having a blast playing with the trio. (Carey & Stephanie too!) The weather has been chilly and damp. A welcome change from the warm, muggy weather we had been having in the sunshine state. Kate always has a smile on her face, Bennett has a thousand different smiles and Hudson, well can a child be any cuter & sweeter?! Hudson loves to give out kisses and Papa Randy has taught him to make the touchdown sign. Speaking of signing, Hudson signs for eating, more and all done. Kate also signs for leche. We are on official duty today as Carey and Stephanie both are working today. I think we might have fun. Nanook has been enjoying daily walks with Randy. They opened a dog park within walking distance that has been a favorite destination.
**update**
It took all day to do 2 loads of laundry, taking care of 3 babies is hard work. Lots of fun but hard work. Hats off to Carey & Stephanie
